The Rocklin Police Department is warning about a scam where criminals pose as police sergeants. They use caller ID spoofing to make their calls look legitimate and try to trick people into paying money by claiming there’s an outstanding warrant or police issue, according to a Facebook post by the Rocklin Police Department.
The scam has already led to calls from concerned citizens. Scammers demand money to avoid arrest or resolve a warrant. The Rocklin Police Department warns the public to "hang up immediately and DO NOT send money." They also stressed that if a law enforcement officer asks for money, especially via gift cards or money transfers, it’s a scam. The main advice is to never share personal or financial information over the phone to avoid identity theft.
This scam is a serious threat, especially for those who aren’t tech-savvy or are easily scared by the fake authority scammers use. To fight this, local authorities are working to educate the public about these tricks. The Rocklin Police Department shared an alert on their Facebook page as part of this effort.
