The weather will stay calm in Northern California until Thursday, with light northerly winds around 10-15 mph, which will ease as the week goes on. Expect high temps in the Valley to be in the upper 50s to mid 60s, while the mountains will stay cooler with highs in the 40s and 50s, as noted by the National Weather Service.
Enjoy the calm weather while it lasts because starting Friday, rain is on the way. A storm from the Pacific Northwest will bring showers from Friday morning through Sunday, with heavier rain expected north of I-80, as per the National Weather Service.
A second wave of rain and snow is expected late Sunday into Monday, but it’s still uncertain exactly where and how strong it will be. Mountain travel, especially in the southern Cascades and northern Sierra, could get tricky with snow-covered roads. Snow levels will start at 5,500 feet, rising to 7,000 feet over the weekend, as reported by the National Weather Service.
For those flying out or expecting someone to touch down, the bright side is VFR conditions will hold across interior Northern California for the next 24 hours. However, local northerly wind gusts reaching 15-20 knots might make some takeoffs and landings more of an adventure on the western side of the Sacramento Valley until around 21z Monday. Mountain and foothill aviators should also be on alert for northeasterly surface winds hitting 15-25 knots with local gusts up to 30-35 knots until 18z Monday, so keep an eye on those windsocks, as per the National Weather Service.
