In response to the cold snap gripping the city, San Antonio has announced the opening of six overnight Resilience Hubs providing residents with necessary refuge from the winter chill. According to the City of San Antonio's official announcement, these hubs will start operating at 6 p.m. today, offering services such as basic supplies, shelter, power, device charging, and free wi-fi. Individuals seeking shelter are advised to bring their own clothes, personal supplies, and medication, while separate accommodations are available for pets.

To ease accessibility to these centers, VIA is offering fare-free rides to or from the hub locations via both bus service and VIA Link, within specified service zones. "Riders should alert the bus operator when boarding; VIAtrans passengers should alert the reservation agent when booking a VIAtrans trip," as per the information shared by the City of San Antonio. Additional extended-hour facilities will also be available during the day on the MLK Holiday, including various community centers and libraries throughout San Antonio, in efforts to provide continuous warmth during the seasonal freeze.

For those unsure where the closest warm place may be, the city offers a resourceful solution. A complete list of the Resilience Hub locations, as well as day-time warming sites, is available at SA.gov/ColdWeather, where visitors can find a map and the entirety of operating hours for each center. This comprehensive directory is part of the city’s approach to maintaining accessibility and inclusivity for all residents during this period of inclement weather.

For unsheltered individuals, the Department of Human Services (DHS) is working with community partners to provide additional temporary overnight shelter space. Locations named include Bode Community Center, Communities under the Bridge (CUB), Corazon SA, Haven for Hope, and Sold Out Believers Church, each prepared to offer refuge and necessary services. The DHS, alongside the City’s Street Outreach Team, operates a Community Connections Hotline (210-207-1799) around the clock to assist our unhoused neighbors with resources and transportation to safe shelters.

The heightened readiness also includes the 311 Customer Service, which will extend its hours to a 24-hour operation through Wednesday to field any inquiries residents may have about cold weather safety, emergency notifications, and the myriad several resources offered by the city and other local organizations. San Antonio emphasizes the gravity of preparedness and community assistance during harsh weather conditions, ensuring that every resident has access to safe and warm environments in times of need.
