As San Antonio braces for severe winter weather, the city has made the call to shut down various public establishments and alter normal operations for Tuesday, January 21, 2025. With a Winter Storm Warning in effect and sleet and icy conditions anticipated, essential personnel, such as police and firefighters, will continue their duties while non-essential city employees are advised to work remotely. According to the City of San Antonio's official announcement, San Antonio's residents are urged to stay indoors and travel only if absolutely necessary, given the treacherous roadways expected.
Closures for the day include all San Antonio Public Library branches, excluding the Central Library, education centers like Pre-K 4 SA, and an array of waste services facilities. In addition, the San Antonio Municipal Court and various cultural centers will not open their doors. It's a day of hunkering down, and taking heed of citywide recommendations for the safety and welfare of all.
The bone-chilling cold has not spared air travel; at San Antonio International Airport, flights are being significantly disrupted. With 26 flights canceled for Monday and 38 for Tuesday, passengers should verify their flight statuses prior to airport travel. As the weather continues its onslaught, San Antonio International Airport is diligently monitoring flight operations. For the latest updates on cancellations and delays, travelers are directed to the airport's website or to reach out to their individual airlines.
Amid the holiday scheduling, the Solid Waste Management department advises that garbage, recycling, and organics collections will operate a day after the normal schedule. However, the shifting weather conditions may lead, to further disruptions in service time, requiring residents to keep an eye out for any additional updates. For animals under the watch of the city, Animal Care Services (ACS) will remain closed to the public while still providing care for the animals on-site and responding to emergency calls. A "ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY" is in full force for pet owners who fail to give proper shelter in freezing conditions, with the city ready to issue citations for violations, as per the City of San Antonio's release.
Safety and shelter are paramount during this storm, which has led to the establishment of Resilience Hubs, places where residents can escape the cold and charge their devices, through Tuesday. Multiple centers around the city have been designated as daytime warming locations, notably the Central Library and Walker Ranch Senior Center. These sites and their offerings can be found detailed on the City of San Antonio's website. VIA is providing fare-free travel to these locations, assisting those who require transportation to these sanctuaries amidst the storm.
The City is also coordinating with various community partners to provide overnight shelters specifically for the homeless population, ensuring that the DHS and their Street Outreach Team are available around the clock to connect those in need with crucial resources, including transportation to shelters. The Community Connection Hotline remains operational, fielding calls and coordinating with services to bolster the community through the inclement weather.
