A recent pit bull attack on the Northwest Side has left a 43-year-old man with severe injuries and the dog's owner, 39-year-old Veronica Elizabeth Polley, facing serious legal charges. Details from the CBS Austin report state that the incident occurred while the victim and his wife were walking their own dog, which was initially targeted by the pit bull.
After managing to protect his pet, the man himself was attacked and subsequently sustained serious injuries to his face. He was quickly rushed to University Hospital for treatment. Neighbors have confirmed that this particular pit bull had been involved in other aggressive incidents, a statement supported by previous reports and captured surveillance video. As reported by News 4 San Antonio, in 2023, this same dog attacked and injured another small dog from the neighborhood.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office has since taken Polley into custody, executing a search warrant at her home and charging her with "Attack by Dog Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury." The pit bull has been quarantined at Bexar County Animal Control, in line with state law. Authorities will soon hold a court hearing in Precinct 2 to discuss further action that will determine the dog's fate as well as the conditions of Polley's ownership rights moving forward.
Additional measures have been considered by officials, including a request to rehome Polley's other pit bull, which they found to not pose a threat. This request will also go before a judge to officially decide whether to grant the order that would prevent Polley from owning any dogs in the future. Such measures come as a response to not only the attack but also the history of the dog's behavior in the community.
