San Francisco residents are set to lose access to twelve Walgreens stores, as the pharmacy chain has confirmed closures that will take place at the end of February. According to SFGATE, the specific dates for these closures range from February 24 to February 27. The affected stores include locations across various neighborhoods, from Bayview to SoMa to the Marina.
Walgreens spokesperson Marty Maloney shared with SFGATE that the decision comes from "increased regulatory and reimbursement pressures," making it difficult to "cover the costs associated with rent, staffing, and supply needs." The move follows an announcement that Walgreens plans to permanently shut down 1,200 stores nationwide over the next three years, aiming to improve earnings and address operational costs. Despite the strategy, the closures have unavoidably become a source of concern for the local communities who must soon adapt their routine health and prescription needs.
The stores slated for closure are located at key points throughout the city. The closing stores' addresses, as confirmed by ABC7 News, include prominent locations such as 3201 Divisadero St. in the Marina, 1750 Noriega St. in the Outer Sunset, and the 135 Powell St. store downtown, among others. The closing locations are not just numbers on a corporate ledger. They are integral parts of the San Francisco tapestry, with long-standing service histories within their neighborhoods.
