The Seattle Police Department has terminated the employment of Officer Kevin Dave following an incident in January 2023 that resulted in the tragic death of 23-year-old Jaahnavi Kandula, who was struck by Dave's patrol car while crossing a street. Kandula, a student from India attending Northeastern University's Seattle campus, was fatally injured in the crosswalk at the time of the accident.
Interim Police Chief Sue Rahr communicated the decision in an email to staff members, acknowledging that while the officer might not have set out to cause harm, the devastating outcome of his actions could not be overlooked. "I believe the officer did not intend to hurt anyone that night, and that he was trying to get to a possible overdose victim as quickly as possible," Rahr wrote, as reported by KIRO 7. "However, I cannot accept the tragic consequences of his dangerous driving. His positive intent does not mitigate the poor decision that caused the loss of a human life and brought discredit to the Seattle Police Department."
As per The Seattle Times, Rahr reiterated her stance, emphasizing that the officer's good intentions did not excuse the perilous decision-making that led to Kandula's death and tarnished the reputation of the police department.
The case also highlighted comments by former Seattle Police Officer Daniel Auderer, who implied Kandula’s life had "limited value" and inaccurately referred to her age during the proceedings. Auderer's remarks were met with intense public backlash, eventually leading to his dismissal from the force in July. "11 thousand dollars. She was 26 anyway," Auderer said, insensitively commenting on the value of Kandula's life, as per an interview shared by KOMO News. These remarks further incited the community, with advocacy groups arguing that city officials had failed to show accountability or provide justice to Kandula's family.
