Seattle University is setting the stage for a powerful celebration this week, as it pays tribute to the enduring influence of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. During the annual MLK event this Thursday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the Pigott Auditorium, attendees will be immersed in discussions of justice, hope, and change—ideals that have remained critical through the decades, and perhaps even more so in today's turbulent times.
The theme for this year’s commemoration has been named "A King for Our Times," a clear nod to the timeless relevance of Dr. King's mission in our ongoing societal discourse. According to an article from Seattle University Newsroom, the event is sponsored by the school’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the keynote address will be delivered by the admired Professor Dr. Lerone A. Martin, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Centennial Professor at Stanford University.
Dr. Martin, also a historian and distinguished author, will tackle the weight of Dr. King's legacy and its present-day pertinence in tackling social challenges. His research focuses on the complicated ties between religion, race, and politics in American history. "I think of Martin Luther King, Jr. as a conversation partner in our studies of history and in helping us think about the future," Dr. Martin said, as stated by Seattle University.
Dr. Martin’s contribution to religious and African American studies are not unnoticed; his first book, "Preaching on Wax: The Phonograph and the Making of Modern African American Religion," earned him the Frank S. and Elizabeth D. Brewer Prize for significant historical scholarship by a first-time author, as per Settle University. As advisor on the 2024 PBS documentary series "Gospel," and serving as Senior Editor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Papers Project, his scholarly endeavors continue to influence public understanding of history. He's also set to release an adapted graphic novel and a nonfiction book on Dr. King's early years and calling later in the year.
