The Metropolitan Police Department has recently reported a second arrest regarding a homicide in Northeast Washington D.C. that occurred in the early hours of September 2, 2024.
Officers were dispatched to the 2800 block of 7th Street, Northeast following reports of gunfire around 1:19 a.m., and upon their arrival, they came upon Townsend Reginald Sowell, who was suffering from gunshot injuries. Sowell, aged 46, was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. MPD released this information through an official announcement on their website.
Nearly five months after the fatal event, on January 24, 2025, 29-year-old Rogea Murray of Northeast D.C. was apprehended by the Capitol Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. According to the MPD's statement, Murray faces charges of First Degree Murder while Armed as indicated by an arrest warrant issued by the DC Superior Court.
The first arrest in this case was made on September 11, 2024, when a 32-year-old male from Temple Hills, Maryland, was located and arrested by the same task force. He was charged with First Degree Murder while Armed (Premeditated) following his transport to the Homicide Branch, also based on a DC Superior Court arrest warrant.
The neighborhood where the crime was committed has been struggling with violent crime, and the local community has been increasingly vocal about the need for effective policing and community engagement. The MPD's diligence in making a second arrest is a step towards addressing these concerns, though the path to healing for the community and justice for the victims remains a challenging and ongoing process.
