In an unsettling episode of violence at the Aliquippa VFW, a second individual, Ron Brown, has been indicted in connection to the vicious assault against Preston Coleman. According to WPXI, surveillance footage from the venue appears to show Brown arriving at the scene and later participating in the attack perpetrated by Brett Ours, who remains at large.
Despite the brutal nature of the incident, and as Coleman, a resident known to frequent the VFW, lies in critical condition, Brown's lawyer suggests the focus should be directed elsewhere. "My client is not the primary client in this case, they are still looking for Ours. He did the right thing and turned himself in today," Steve Valsamidis, Brown's defense attorney, stated, as reported by WPXI. His client faces serious charges yet is currently held on a $100,000 bond.
Ours, who is accused of carrying out a protracted and severe beating against Coleman, which included over 300 hits as well as strangulation, has been charged with a slew of violent crimes. This includes attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault, among others. As detailed by WTAE, it's reported that at one juncture during the onslaught, Ours instructed his girlfriend to bring him his knife, and when she refused, Ours responded with violence against her as well.
Coleman's predicament is dire, as he remains hospitalized in a medically induced coma. In a press event earlier today, Coleman's family, through their lawyer, implied race could be a factor in the attack, stating, "It is a hate crime because you don't do this to a human being. Humans are not to be treated this way," attorney Steve Barth said, per WTAE. As per the Beaver County district attorney, this line of investigation is still under exploration.
Authorities continue their search for Ours and have asked the public for any information regarding his whereabouts.
