New Year's Eve in metro Denver was marred by severe traffic disruptions as snowfall and icy conditions precipitated a series of accidents and road closures across the region. According to Denver7, the north metro area experienced a particularly swift onset of wintry weather around 9 p.m., leading to hazardous driving conditions in Thornton and Brighton, and prompting both cities to declare accident alerts.
Complications escalated when southbound Interstate 25 in Northglenn was brought to a halt due to the icy conditions, causing several semi-trucks to slide and obstruct the traffic lanes, the Northglenn police reported significant disruptions, with traffic being rerouted onto East 120th Avenue. KDVR noted that the interstate was subsequently reopened shortly after 11 p.m., but not before causing considerable delays for revelers and travelers.
Elsewhere, Interstate 25 in Castle Rock was the scene of a multi-vehicle collision involving over 20 vehicles, as mentioned by The Denver Gazette. While no injuries were reported in that particular incident, Colorado State Patrol cited at least two other accidents in the area, which took place between 8:20 and 9 p.m. One accident involved a vehicle striking a cable rail and another a collision between a sedan and an SUV.
