On the morning of New Year's Day, a Tesla Cybertruck laden with explosives detonated outside of a Trump hotel in Las Vegas, resulting in injuries to seven individuals and the death of the driver, Matthew Livelsberger, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officials in a statement obtained by Cleveland19 News. Livelsberger, confirmed by officials as an active-duty member of the U.S. Army's elite Green Berets, had several ties to Northeast Ohio, where he is also the listed owner of a home in Cuyahoga Falls, purchased in 2019.
Investigators have been piecing together Livelsberger’s background, uncovering Ohio connections from childhood to property ownership. As per a WKYC report, Livelsberger was a 2005 Bucyrus High School graduate who played sports in his youth before joining the military in 2006. It was also found that court records tied him to an older address in Westerville, Ohio, where he was ticketed for speeding in 2011.
The tragic event has drawn attention to Livelsberger’s distinguished military career, highlighted by many overseas assignments and accolades, including two Bronze Stars and an Army Commendation Medal with Valor, according to details provided by the Army. Following the Las Vegas explosion, Tesla's senior team, including CEO Elon Musk, was reported by Cleveland19 to be investigating the unprecedented incident involving their vehicle. Multiple agencies continue to investigate the exact motivations behind Livelsberger's actions.
Previous reports by the Canton Repository indicate that local Ohio residents remember Livelsberger in different capacities—neighbors noting his mother's move to a house he purchased for her and grandparents declining to comment when approached. The incident is compounded by its timing, following another attack in New Orleans' French Quarter by Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, which is also under investigation for possible terrorism links. However, the FBI has found 'no definitive link' between the two attacks, as stated by the WKYC.
