In a case that has sent shockwaves throughout Sonoma County, two men have been sentenced to spend centuries behind bars for their heinous crimes against children. On Thursday, Judge Mark Urioste handed down lengthy sentences to Giovany Neftali Barrientos-Perez, who will serve 500 years and four months to life. Bayron Vasquez was sentenced to 485 years to life in state prison. This sentencing, as reported by the Sonoma County District Attorney's Office, concludes a grueling trial lasting nearly six weeks and concludes with convictions on a total of 43 counts of child molestation against multiple children.

The crimes spanned from 2010 to 2021 and included lewd and lascivious conduct with a child, sexual intercourse with a child under eleven, aggravated sexual assault of a child, forcible rape of a child, and the continuous sexual abuse of a minor. The investigation began in 2019 when a Santa Rosa school employee reported an abuse disclosed by a student, and Santa Rosa Police then embarked on a sprawling multi-year investigation that involved three suspects and four young girls as victims.

After months of pre-trial litigation and several changes in counsel, Vasquez and Barrientos-Perez stood trial starting October 1, 2024, exercising their right to a jury trial, whereas a third defendant resolved her case beforehand, receiving a six-year prison sentence. Testimony from witnesses and the survivors, some now adults, was presented over several weeks, detailing the grooming, manipulation, and extensive sexual abuse they suffered.

The jury returned its guilty verdicts on November 25 for all counts deliberations that started on November 15. The survivors gave impactful statements during the sentencing, expressing the profound toll the abuse had on their lives. Judge Urioste, who labeled the case as one of the most terrible sets of circumstances he had ever witnessed, issued the maximum sentences in accordance with the gravity of the offenses. The successful prosecution was managed by Deputy District Attorney Brian Morimune, assisted by District Attorney Investigator Stephen Bussell, and with the investigative groundwork laid by the late Detective Marylou Armer and continued by Detective Justin McLean.

District Attorney Carla Rodriguez reiterated the importance of reporting sexual abuse, emphasizing the victims' courage, which led to the conviction of Barrientos-Perez and Vasquez: "Mr. Barrientos-Perez and Mr. Vasquez engaged in a horrific pattern of conduct that would never have been uncovered without the bravery of the victims," per the Sonoma County District Attorney's Office.
