Early Monday morning in Southeast Portland, police responded to a call involving a potentially armed burglary suspect barricaded inside a business on SE 10th Avenue. As reported by KOIN, officers arrived at the scene around 5:00 a.m. and were soon joined by the Special Emergency Reaction Team and the Crisis Negotiation Team to manage the delicate situation.
The police response, ramping up to include specialized units, occurred in the 2400 block of Southeast 10th Avenue within the Hosford-Abernethy neighborhood. OregonLive indicated that in their attempt "to bring the suspect into custody safely," officials blocked the streets surrounding the location and advised residents to stay indoors as the situation unfolded, reminiscent of a scene far removed from the community's routine bustle.
During the standoff, police used a loudspeaker to communicate with the suspect, as KGW crews on site reported. They relayed instructions to the individual, pressuring them to exit the building in order to resolve the tensions without further escalation or harm.
The outcome, after a few tense hours, was the arrest of the suspect at approximately 7:45 a.m., as informed by Portland police. Following the arrest, police lifted the cordon, reopening Southeast 10th Avenue and nearby streets from Southeast Division Street to Southeast Caruthers Street, restoring a semblance of normalcy as the sun climbed higher over the Rose City's skyline.
