Twelve state attorneys general have taken a firm stand against President Trump's recent executive orders aimed at dismantling diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility initiatives, slamming them as "unnecessary" and "disingenuous." In a joint statement released today, leaders including Attorney General Kwame Raoul and colleagues from California to Washington criticized Trump for what they see as an unjust attack on valuable policies that support fair opportunities for all Americans.

The coalition, which represents a population in the tens of millions, asserts that the president's orders have less to do with addressing discrimination, and more with targeting beneficial programs under the guise of fighting it. "Contrary to President Trump's assertions, the policies he seeks to end do not diminish the importance of individual merit, nor do they mean that employers are lowering their standards, hiring unqualified candidates, or engaging in race-and-sex-based preferences," the statement read. They suggest Trump's narrative surrounding the recent tragic plane crash, which he blamed on DEIA policies, misses the mark insults those affected by the disaster, and belittles the service members working in the military, and air traffic control.

Attorneys general from states like California, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, and Washington, along with Raoul, emphasized the role of DEIA initiatives in fostering environments where everyone's success is possible. These programs are designed to promote respect, understanding, and the celebration of diverse perspectives, ensuring everyone receives fair treatment and equal access to opportunities in both workplace and educational settings.

Moreover, inclusive employment practices, such as expanded parental leave and flexible work arrangements, cater to employees' diverse needs, family constructs, and abilities. The statement highlighted, "DEIA initiatives simply ensure that there are fair opportunities for everyone, helping to maximize contributions from all employees and enabling businesses and organizations to succeed in their missions." It contends that these initiatives do not conflict with merit-based systems but rather aim to provide equal playing fields where an individual's talent and hard work can prevail.

In their role as chief law enforcement officers, the attorneys general are committed to the enforcement of federal and state civil rights laws, reinforcing their stand against discrimination in any form. The group strongly opposes the president's recent orders, and the misleading narrative, he has been propagating to justify them. Through their unified dissent, they argue for the continuity and necessity of DEIA policies, which according to them, remain crucial for combating discrimination and supporting a cohesive society.
