The St. Helens School District has been embroiled in scandal since November 2024, following initial allegations of sexual abuse that resulted in the removal of staff members from its high school. In the ensuing weeks, this list only expanded, including teachers and administrators charged either with sexual misconduct or for failing to report such crimes, with the former superintendent, Scot Stockwell, among the accused, as confirmed by KOIN.
Acting Superintendent, in the eye of this storm, announced an early departure from his position, stepping down by January 31. During a recent Zoom call with district communications staff, reporters questioned Webb's absence along with their doubts about his claim of having held "multiple media briefings" throughout his tenure, as reported by KGW.
Following Webb's imminent departure, the school board has set its sights on the rapid procurement of another acting superintendent to install the new appointment by February 3. This would ensure a minimal gap in leadership until the current school year's end. Meanwhile, amid the administrative turmoil and ensuing investigations, the district had engaged a third-party to scrutinize the misconduct allegations. This third party was selected on the recommendation of the district's legal counsel, raising concerns within the St. Helens community, as relayed by KATU.
A parent representing the district voices, Ashley Christner, contested the reason for yet another temporary superintendent, speculating on the fulfilled objectives, asking, "If the objectives of the temporary superintendent role have been fulfilled, why is it necessary to appoint yet another temporary superintendent?" as stated by KATU. The district spokesperson, J. Marie, defended the decision to hire through legal counsel, asserting, "You know, that is a standard practice because the law firms have connections with, they know who are the good, you know, who are good investigators with strong reputations and the experience and skills necessary to conduct an investigation of the complexity and depth" In response to the concerns, the district stands by its standard practices and its unfolding quest for another interim leader.
