Ray Tierney, the Suffolk County District Attorney who has gained considerable attention for his role in the arrest of the suspected Gilgo Beach serial killer, has officially announced his campaign for re-election. During an event in Riverhead, Tierney was lauded by a crowd of supporters for his work with the cold case team in apprehending Rex Heuermann, which has drawn eyes from around the globe. Focusing on the progress of the case, Tierney promises a deeper dive into the evidence as pre-trial hearings advance, as reported by CBS News.
Amidst his re-election campaign, the DA also highlighted the noteworthy efforts his office made not only in the infamous murder case but also in the battle against the fentanyl crisis plaguing Suffolk County. Tierney pointed out the stark contrast in the number of overdose deaths compared to homicides, emphasizing the need for comprehensive action. "We need to stop sticking our heads in the sand, and we need to address it," Tierney told the New York Post, disclosing there were 25 homicides and a staggering 464 overdoses in 2023.
The pre-trial hearing set for January 15 will notably focus on DNA evidence, which is at the heart of the case against Heuermann. The defense team has requested the exclusion of expert nuclear DNA testimony related to hairs found at the crime scenes. These hairs have been linked to Heuermann and his relatives at six of the seven locations tied to the indictment. Responding to the defense's contention over the reliability of the California lab working with Suffolk investigators, Tierney affirmed, "If we were not confident in the efficacy and the admissibility of that evidence, we would not have used it," according to CBS News.
Tierney's commitment to restructuring the county's law enforcement is evident in the creation of specialized bureaus for homicide and gang-related crimes, along with a task force specifically for the Gilgo Beach murders. These changes are part of the broader strategy Tierney has employed since being elected in 2021. "So ... we applied the expertise and the resources of a great many people. We took those resources, that know-how, and that knowledge and we put it all together. And we came up with a result which we are still working on," he elucidated to the New York Post. Tierney, a career prosecutor, asserts that the campaign kickoff is just the genesis of continued efforts to fulfill his commitments to the community.
While the pursuit of justice in the Gilgo Beach murders remains at the forefront, the DA reassures that the investigation into all related unsolved cases will persist. "We are going to look at these cold cases in a comprehensive way, each one," he told CBS News, underscoring his dedication to unearthing the truth behind the rest of the unsolved Gilgo Beach cases. Notably, Heuermann's estranged wife and children have not been named as suspects in the ongoing investigation.
