An armed suspect was fatally shot by Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies on Monday night when the individual, holding a knife, was involved in a confrontation with local law enforcement outside a residence on the 9300 block of Wild Lilac Circle, according to officials.

Deputies were called to the scene around 11:15 p.m. to support fire officials with a reportedly combative man, and upon arrival, they attempted non-lethal methods to subdue him, but after the suspect approached them with the knife, the situation escalated quickly, a sheriff's spokesperson told ABC10.

The deputies initially tried to de-escalate the tense situation using verbal commands which were unsuccessful and one deputy even fired a beanbag round from a less-lethal shotgun that seemed to have no impact on the man. Subsequently, another deputy resorted to using lethal force, shooting the man multiple times which led to his death at the scene, as per a statement obtained by KCRA.

The incident left no deputies injured though the sequence of events has triggered an investigation with the deputies involved being placed on administrative leave, and to solidify the transparency of the incident body camera footage from the deputies will be released to the public within a specified 45 days. While officials also noted that the man's family members, who were present in the home at the time of the shooting, would be interviewed as part of the investigation per information provided by Sgt. Amar Gandhi with the sheriff's office to KCRA.

Further details regarding the type of knife the suspect was wielding were not disclosed, and deputies are conducting a thorough canvas of the neighborhood to gather more information and statements from possible witnesses.
