An officer-involved shooting in San Francisco's Tenderloin district left one suspect dead yesterday afternoon. Officers were initially called to the intersection of Mission and 9th Streets around 4:56 p.m. following reports of a shooting, according to official reports from the San Francisco Police Department. Upon arriving at the scene, they found a man with serious gunshot wounds already being cared for by paramedics. The victim was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
While securing the location, police were tipped off that the potential suspect may be within a nearby building. They established a perimeter, and multiple SFPD units, including Specialist, Tactical, and Hostage Negotiation teams, were called to manage the situation. The standoff took a critical turn when the unidentified subject, reportedly weaponized, refused to surrender and come out of the building. Amid the confrontation, a shooting involving police personnel occurred.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect suffered fatal injuries in the incident. It was found that a firearm was in the possession of the suspect at the scene.
The ongoing investigation involves numerous city departments, including the District Attorney's Office, the SFPD Investigative Services Division, the Chief Medical Examiner's Office, and the Department of Police Accountability. SFPD has promised a town hall meeting within ten days to address the details and concerns surrounding the officer-involved shooting as part of its commitment to community transparency and accountability.
In light of these events, the SFPD is reaching out to the public for any additional information that may be relevant to the case. Witnesses or individuals with knowledge of the shooting are encouraged to contact the SFPD anonymously at 1-415-575-4444 or send a text message beginning with SFPD to TIP411.
