A man suspected of opening fire on two security personnel after an alleged shoplifting incident at a Target store in downtown Los Angeles has been detained following a standoff with police. The Los Angeles Police Department arrested the individual after a situation that began around 11:30 a.m. and endured until just before 5 p.m. in an apartment located on the 1200 block of Ingraham Street, as reported by NBC Los Angeles.
The drama unfolded less than a mile from the Target at the FIGat7th shopping center where the shooting occurred. The suspect allegedly tried to hurriedly leave the store with merchandise stuffed into a suitcase Monday night near 9 p.m. When confronted by store security, the man is accused to have indiscriminately fired, injuring two guards in the process, as detailed by ABC7.
According to a FOX LA report, residents of the building where the suspect was later arrested described the area as low-income housing. Neighbors expressed shock, with one stating they had "never seen him a day in my life to be honest with you." Los Angeles Police Department representatives, such as Capt. Raul Jovel, have voiced their apprehension over such violent confrontations, underscoring the potential for widespread harm in a statement citing that "This particular individual has shown a disregard for human life."
The injured security guards were rushed to a hospital, and while one has been released, the other remains in critical care. Despite the chaos and threats to human life, no shoppers sustained injuries, as per FOX LA.
