CBS News Los Angeles reports that the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, and the suspect, 42-year-old Jason Wright was apprehended following a chase that ended near Beaumont.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene on Lincoln Street after the victim reported the robbery, in which he was constrained while the assailant, armed with a knife, proceeded to steal his vehicle. According to a statement obtained by Riverside County Sheriff's Office, shortly after deputies arrived at the location a vehicle matching that of the victim's was spotted at a drive-thru restaurant in Beaumont. Upon noticing the police presence, Wright attempted a hasty escape path, which involved driving over a curb and fleeing the establishment in reverse.
Despite briefly losing sight of the vehicle, authorities managed to track it down with assistance from the public, the Beaumont Police Department, and the Sheriff's Aviation Unit, eventually cornering the suspect on dirt roads south of Beaumont. Upon reaching a dead end, Wright abandoned the car and attempted to evade capture on foot but was ultimately detained without further incident.
Wright faces several charges, including robbery, kidnapping, false imprisonment of an elder, vehicle theft, and a probation violation. After the ordeal, he was booked into the Smith Correctional Facility. Those who may possess additional information regarding this incident are urged to contact Investigator Jimenez at the Riverside County Sheriff's Dispatch. The investigation, as mentioned in the Riverside Sheriff's announcement, remains active prompting law enforcement to seek further evidence or witness accounts.
