In Hercules, a suspected DUI driver's late-night crash turned into a dramatic foot chase and the discovery of what police described as an unregistered firearm. The Hercules Police Department reported the incident, which originated with a vehicle slamming into a fire hydrant on John Muir Parkway and ended with a man being booked on multiple charges.
A witness observed a male subject, later identified as an Oakland resident, leaving the scene and heading toward a Safeway. An officer found the suspect near Alfred Nobel Drive, but the man ran, ignoring commands. Alone at first, the officer gave chase, and a struggle ensued. It was during this confrontation that a Taser was used by the officer to "safely detain" the subject, as the Hercules Police Department details. Reinforcements arrived, and despite continuous resistance from the suspect, officers managed to handcuff him.
During the scuffle, officers saw a pistol magazine loaded with .357 ammunition fall and break apart. In a subsequent search, the officers discovered an unregistered Glock 33 with an additional loaded magazine in the subject's cross-body bag. The arresting officers noted the strong smell of alcohol on the man, which complemented the DUI charge alongside the weapons charges he now faces.
The subject's name was not released but was taken to the Martinez Detention Facility following the altercation.
