A collision in southeast Las Vegas claimed the life of a motorcyclist on New Year's Eve. The incident, which involved a suspected DUI driver with a child in the vehicle, occurred on Tuesday night at approximately 11:40 p.m., near the intersection of East Flamingo Road and South Seville Street.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported that Pedro Chavez-Martinez, 45, was driving a 2005 Nissan Titan westbound when he attempted a left turn into the path of an eastbound 2024 Yamaha motorcycle. The impact of the collision threw the rider, a 35-year-old man from Canyon Country, California, into the front yard of a nearby home, where he was pronounced dead at the scene. News3LV noted that the rider's death is the 159th traffic-related fatality within the jurisdiction of the LVMPD for the year 2024.
Chavez-Martinez remained at the scene and, according to police, showed signs of impairment. He was subsequently arrested and faces charges of DUI and child endangerment, as he had a 9-year-old passenger with him in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The relationship between Chavez-Martinez and the child has not been disclosed. 8 News Now reported that Chavez-Martinez has been booked into the Clark County Detention Center.
