Tampa Boosts Police Patrols "Operation Safe Resolution" for New Year's Festivities and ReliaQuest BowlSource: Google Street View

As the year comes to a close, Tampa is gearing up for its New Year's celebrations and a significant sporting event—the ReliaQuest Bowl, with increased patrols by the Tampa Police Department (TPD) to ensure public safety. Police Chief Lee Bercaw announced that the city would be implementing "Operation Safe Resolution" which will see more patrol cars on the streets to deter drunk drivers and curb other reckless behaviors, as WFLA reports.

Chief Bercaw emphasized the police's commitment to public safety, stating, "This is an exciting time for our community, businesses and visitors. We want everyone to be safe." According to FOX 13 News, TPD has all specialized units ready, including mounted and bike patrols. Officers will also be keeping an eye from the air, and some may blend into the crowd in plain clothes. Last year, during NYE, TPD arrested 40 people for driving under the influence, reinforcing the necessity for vigilance.

Alongside DUI checks, the TPD has urged civilians to abstain from celebratory gunfire—a concern raised considering its potential to cause harm. As festivities unfold, with parades and football fans pouring into the streets, TPD's increased policing efforts are a preventive measure for a safe holiday experience. Fans from various parts of the country, such as Michigan's dance team parents Maura Bailey and Kevin Hawley, have noted the strong security presence, with Bailey stating to Bay News 9, "There's so much security, it's been amazing."

In tandem with enhanced patrols, Chief Bercaw is also calling on the community's participation for a co-operative effort in maintaining safety, including using designated drivers or ride-shares and the responsible use of fireworks. He stressed the importance of the community's role, saying to Bay News 9, "You can call us, you can text us, but we need everybody's eyes and ears." The police also remind the public to report any suspicious activity, as staying alert contributes greatly to the collective security efforts during such high-profile events.
