A distressing incident has emerged from a Tampa daycare, where a worker has been arrested for allegedly abusing a child in his care. According to WFLA, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office reported the arrest of 26-year-old Denario Powell on charges of child abuse after he was accused of causing harm to a 3-year-old boy at Panda Hugs Academy on Bruce B. Downs Blvd.
Surveillance footage from December 30, reviewed by authorities, apparently showed Powell removing the young boy from a chair and leading him to a bathroom. During this time, witnesses report to have heard sounds consistent with the child crying and Powell yelling, along with "loud banging noises" from the bathroom. The child later emerged bearing "multiple lacerations and abrasions to his face and neck," a detail corroborated by Sheriff Chad Chronister who said in a statement reported by FOX 13 News, "No child should ever endure harm at the hands of someone entrusted with their care and education." The sheriff added that the actions of Powell were "beyond reprehensible" and that justice would be pursued to protect the well-being of all children in the community.
This alarming incident has prompted a strong response from local authorities. In a statement obtained by ABC Action News, Sheriff Chronister emphasized their commitment to safeguarding children, "Let this arrest send a clear message: we will not tolerate anyone who threatens the safety and well-being of the children in our community."
Powell was arrested yesterday, and has been charged with one count of child abuse.
