The Harris County community continues to seek closure in the unsolved murder of Elizabeth "Liz" Barraza, who was killed outside her home in 2019. In an effort to honor her memory and to potentially draw out new leads, a memorial bench was recently dedicated in Burroughs Park in Tomball, as reported by Click2Houston.
The park held a special significance for Liz, reportedly being her favorite place to spend time with loved ones. The initiative, known as the We Remember Memorial Project, is the first of its kind in Harris County and aims to provide both a space for grieving and a beacon to help raise awareness and hopefully bring in more information that might solve ongoing investigations. The benches, featuring a QR code linking to Crime Stoppers of Houston, look to equally raise awareness and offer resources to families who are trying to find the means to continue forward amidst their losses. In a touching statement, Liz's father, Bob Nuelle, said, "This is a place of peace for us when we're struggling, when we're trying to find what's necessary to go forward. This is where I come," in an excerpt obtained by Click2Houston.
At the bench dedication, hopes were voiced that the memorial would also serve as a catalyst for justice. "We're just so hopeful and praying that this year the police will be able to solve it," Liz's widower, Sergio Barraza, told KHOU. Despite the passage of years, the family and authorities have not given up on finding the perpetrator. Sgt. Michael Ritchie with the Harris County Sheriff's Office homicide unit confirmed that new steps are being taken, such as interviewing new individuals and a grand jury subpoena for certain records.
A reward of $50,000 for information leading to an arrest in Liz's case remains on the table, and those with information are urged to step forward. As Nuelle put it, "All it takes is this message to hit the one person that can call the tip line and solve the case," a sentiment reinforced by Crime Stoppers and the Sheriff's Office, as reported by KHOU. Anyone with pertinent information is strongly encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip online.
