A water main break early yesterday morning led to the closure of a section of Providence Road in south Charlotte, causing traffic disruptions and contributing to icy driving conditions as the city prepared for its first significant snowfall in years. The incident occurred near the entrance to the Levine Jewish Community Center, initially causing partial lane closures before authorities fully closed the road, as reported by WBTV.
The closures were further complicated by a small fire that broke out shortly before 8 a.m., leading to a temporary redirection of traffic. The Charlotte Fire Department contained the fire, and the affected stretch of Providence Road was reopened, according to WCNC. However, the water main break continued to cause icy conditions. Detours have been set up, with northbound drivers advised to use Old Providence Road, Sharon View Road to Carmel Road or Highway 51, then Sardis Road. Southbound drivers are directed to Fairview Road, Carmel Road, and Sharon View Road, returning to Old Providence Road or Sardis Road.
Charlotte Water reported that the section of Providence Road at the intersection near Shalom Park Drive needed to be closed for repairs, causing significant delays throughout the morning.
WSOCTV reports the timing of the water main break at just after 6:30 a.m., with fire crews responding to an unrelated fire at Poppy’s Bagels & More just after 7:30 a.m.
