A tragic crash claimed the life of a 15-year-old Grand Rapids resident on New Year's Eve northwest of Greenville, as confirmed by the Kent County Sheriff's Office. The incident, which unfolded at the intersection of Lincoln Lake Avenue and 17 Mile Road around 7:40 p.m., involved a northbound black Nissan Sentra driven by a 16-year-old from Gowen, according to WOODTV. The driver's attempted U-turn directly resulted in a collision with a black Infiniti driven by a 26-year-old Holland woman following close behind.
The 15-year-old, a passenger in the Sentra along with another 17-year-old from Greenville, was the sole casualty, suffering injuries severe enough to quickly turn fatal despite being transported to a hospital for care. Local authorities, including the Spencer Township Fire Department, Rockford Ambulance, as well as the Kent County Sheriff's Office, responded to the scene. "KCSO extends our deepest condolences to the family and all who are impacted by this accident," deputies said, as per WWMT.
The crash, which remains under investigation by the Kent County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Unit, has cast a somber tone on the local community during what was supposed to be a time of celebration and looking forward to the New Year. According to FOX 17 News, there was no immediate indication that other vehicles were involved in the incident, and no further injuries were reported beyond the tragic loss of the young passenger. The other teens and the driver of the Infiniti were unhurt.
