Travelers through Pemiscot County are about to experience delays as Interstate 155 undergoes bridge maintenance. Crews are set to perform essential upkeep on the bridge stretching across the mighty Mississippi River. According to an official statement from the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), starting January 27, both north and southbound lanes of Interstate 155 will be reduced to a single lane. The restrictions will see the northbound lane at a 14-foot width, while the southbound is squeezed tighter to a 10-foot width.
The maintenance work is to to be carried out daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., provided the weather cooperates. Cats and dogs raining from the sky would no doubt hinder such endeavors. MoDOT has earmarked April 7 as the expected completion date for these repairs. Motorists are warned that the work zone will be actively enforced at all times until the project wraps up. The advisory from MoDOT, made public on its website, includes a caution for those driving through the area to exercise increased vigilance.
Signage rooting into the ground like steadfast sentinels will outline the parameters of the work zone. It's yet another reminder of the risks that these workers face, their lives inches and unpredictable driver behavior away from tragedy – a stark image against the backdrop of union fights for better working conditions and safety standards.
