In a recent tragedy that took place in Tampa, Tech. Sgt. Richard Padilla, a member of the U.S. Air Force stationed at MacDill Air Force Base, was fatally struck in a hit-and-run incident. Upon the evening of the incident, Padilla had been walking along Interbay Boulevard when he and another pedestrian were hit by a vehicle driven by a suspect identified as Jeremiah Bailey, WFLA reports.
A statement from MacDill Air Force Base, as obtained by FOX13 News, confirmed that 37-year-old Padilla served in the 24th Rapid Deployment Squadron of the 24th Special Operations Wing. Lt. Col. Michael Biederman, 24th RDS commander, stressed the profound impact of the loss, saying, "We are deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of Richie. He embodied what it meant to be a warrior," and further expressed, "Our deepest sympathies are with Richie’s family and friends as we all mourn the loss of our teammate, mentor, and friend."
The other victim, 43-year-old Jesse Rickett, was hospitalized in critical condition. Following the hit-and-run, the suspect, Jeremiah Bailey, 48, engaged in a police pursuit which culminated on I-275. Bailey—who Tampa police said had been fleeing from another shooting scene prior to the hit-and-run—was shot and killed during the encounter with police, which also resulted in injuries to three officers, WTSP further details.
Amidst the chaos and sorrow, Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw addressed the devastating events. He was quoted by WFLA stating, "Our thoughts are with the families of all those impacted by this tragic series of events. This individual, who already had a violent history, displayed a blatant disregard for human life, resulting in this devastating outcome." Counseling services were made available through MacDill Air Force Base for those affected by Padilla's death. To offer support during this difficult time, the base provided contact information for the MacDill Military Family Life Counselors.
