Rebecca C. Lutzko, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, announced her resignation effective 11:59 p.m. yesterday, leaving behind a legacy of tackling a broad scope of criminal activity. Following her departure, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Carol M. Skutnik is set to take the helm as the Acting United States Attorney, as per the Vacancies Reform Act, starting at midnight today, according to a U.S. Department of Justice release.
Lutzko, having stepped into the interim role on June 9, 2023, by appointment from the United States District Judges for the Northern District of Ohio, secured Senate confirmation thereafter. During her tenure, she led an office comprising roughly 175 personnel, driving enforcement of federal laws and spearheading numerous initiatives to address violent crime, fraud, and civil rights violations. "It has been the single greatest honor of my career to lead the Office and serve the people of northern Ohio as their United States Attorney," Lutzko stated in a statement obtained by the U.S. Department of Justice, expressing gratitude toward President Biden and other key figures for the opportunity to serve.
Under Lutzko's guidance, noteworthy successes were recorded in civil and criminal cases. The Office pursued strategic case selection to maximize positive impact for its communities while maintaining high productivity compared to other U.S. Attorney's Offices nationwide. Particularly significant strides were made in the reduction of violent crime. Establishing the new Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC) contributed to a notable decrease in violent crime rates within Northern Ohio this year.
Among the many successful operations and investigations under Lutzko's watch were efforts to tackle firearms trafficking, gang-related activity, and healthcare fraud—with an exemplary instance being the sentencing of Dr. Ankita Singh for healthcare fraud, resulting in millions in restitution. Lutzko noted that the credit for these accomplishments belongs to the office's staff and the cooperation of law enforcement partners, saying, "We have held ourselves to standards of excellence and integrity in pursuing those cases," as per the U.S. Department of Justice's announcement.
In addition to her prosecution duties, Lutzko also led significant outreach efforts such as a "Safe Storage" campaign to promote gun safety and a pilot program working with recently released inmates to avoid recidivism. The Assistant U.S. Attorneys in her office also focused on public corruption, financial fraud schemes, and protecting the civil rights of citizens through enforcement actions and community partnerships. Her commitment to rigorous civil and criminal enforcement reshaped the landscape of justice throughout the vast region comprising Ohio's 40 northern counties, reaffirming the values of fairness and due process in the relentless quest for justice.
