The UNF Army ROTC has hit a significant benchmark with the promotion of its leader, Captain Christopher Ricciardi, to the rank of Major. In a ceremony laced with military tradition and modest fanfare, United States Army Colonel Jason Dumser presided over the event, highlighting the elevation of a leader whose resume speaks to both the grit of field command and the intellect required for the shaping of future officers.
"It is an honor to come to UNF to recognize Major Ricciardi on his special day," Colonel Dumser said, according to a University of North Florida press release. This promotion, one not easily earned, signifies Major Ricciardi's ability to effectively lead soldiers at this new, elevated rank. UNF's program strives to be a leader among ROTC programs nationally, and under Ricciardi's command since January 2023, it appears well-positioned to do just that.
The UNF Army ROTC program, with roots stretching back to the 1980s and a renewal in 2009, has commissioned over 160 officers. The current academic year has witnessed the issuance of scholarships and stipends exceeding $650,000 for its cadets. Moreover, the program is on track to commission 22 officers into various branches of the Army by May 2025, a testament to its growing importance and success in equipping young leaders for military service.
"Ricciardi's promotion is not only a significant milestone in his military service, but a testament to the rising status of UNF's ROTC and its important role as the US Army continues to strategically grow its officer training programs," UNF President Moez Limayem told the press. This event not only marks an individual achievement but also recognises the caliber of training that the program provides amid a broader effort to strengthen the nation's defense forces.
With a career that includes deployment to Europe and Asia, and multiple tours in the Middle East, Major Ricciardi's experience serves as a cornerstone for both his leadership and the mentorship he extends to the ROTC cadets. Accompanied by a slew of awards that include the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and the Presidential Unit Citation Award, Ricciardi's military education is equally robust with degrees from Florida Atlantic University and the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa.
