A situation unfolded in DeSoto County when local law enforcement was alerted to the presence of a wanted individual from Georgia. According to a social media post by the DeSoto County Sheriff's Office, on Friday, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia informed them that Matthew Steven Rollie, born September 30, 1994, was in the jurisdiction of DeSoto County. Rollie was wanted for enticing a child for indecent purposes and was also noted as a sexual offender who had failed to register locally.

Despite a thorough search by the Criminal Investigative Division and Uniformed Patrol Division, Rollie wasn't found right away. Early yesterday, two deputies followed a lead and stopped a vehicle on State Road 72 between Thigpen Road and Addison Avenue. Rollie was inside, and while they were confirming his identity, he armed himself and fired at the deputies, hitting one of them multiple times.

The sheriff's office detailed that in the ensuing conflict, Rollie was fatally shot and declared deceased at the scene. The injured deputy is currently receiving medical treatment and is reported to be in recovery. "The deputy that was injured is being treated and is recovering at this time," assured the DeSoto County Sheriff's Office statement.

In line with the protocol for deputy-involved shootings, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now carrying out the investigation. Sheriff Potter has committed to providing updates on the case to the public once available. More details regarding the incident may emerge as the investigation continues to unfold.
