At the Women's Community Correctional Center (WCCC), the holiday season witnessed a unique blend of celebration and connection. The facility hosted its "Star Light, Star Bright Kids' Day" event on December 10, 2024, a festive gathering that brought together incarcerated mothers and their children. As reported by the Governor's Office, the event included an array of activities such as puppet shows, arts and crafts, and treats, and even featured a special appearance by Santa Claus.
As per the Governor's Office, the event was a collaboration with the Pūʻā Foundation and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu. Ten mothers and their 18 children participated, along with 10 caregivers who helped facilitate the festivities. Meanwhile, approximately 30 volunteers from the foundation and 12 inmates contributed their efforts to make the event possible.
Bishop Larry Silva of the Diocese of Honolulu blessed the families, and the Sisters of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts sang with the mothers and children. Students from Sacred Hearts Academy performed a hula, adding a cultural touch to the event. The day’s activities highlighted the bond between mothers and their children.
In a statement highlighted by the Governor's Office, DCR Director Tommy Johnson expressed gratitude towards volunteers and staff, stating, "We couldn't have done this without them." WCCC Warden Ione "Noni" Guillonta emphasized the importance of the event, "Events like this are critical for mothers to maintain their connections with their children." To conclude the event, participants were given gifts donated by community partners, contributing to the holiday spirit.
The Star Light, Star Bright Kids' Day was the sixth and final event of 2024, organized to strengthen family connections within the correctional system. For more than two decades, these events have been part of a collaborative effort between the Diocese of Honolulu and the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (DCR) to support parent-child relationships during incarceration.
