The West Mifflin Area High School has extended its shift to remote learning for high school students due to ongoing clean-up efforts after a fire damaged the school's auditorium. Initially, the school planned to transition back to in-person instruction after a single day of remote learning post-fire on December 16. However, the presence of "highly corrosive soot" necessitated a more prolonged cleanup, thus delaying the return, according to a letter from Superintendent Jeffrey Soles obtained by CBS News Pittsburgh.
According to WTAE, the fire, which officials believe began with a scissor lift catching flame while left plugged in overnight, caused damage predominantly to the wall and flooring of the auditorium. This incident prompted the need to quickly adapt and extend remote learning for students tomorrow and Friday. The school district now anticipates safely reintroducing students to in-person classes on Monday, Jan. 6. In a recent update, Soles mentioned that the determination to continue with remote learning was made in consultation with the restoration company and contractors, signaling a possibility to extend remote learning further if necessary.
While high school students adapt to continue their education virtually, neighboring Clara Barton, Homeville, and West Mifflin Area Middle School will operate as usual with in-person classes, unaffected by the high school's predicament. In a message to families quoted in CBS News Pittsburgh, Superintendent Soles thanked the community for its patience and cooperation, saying, "We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to ensure the safety and readiness of the school for all students and staff."
Meanwhile, students and faculty from West Mifflin High are waiting to quickly adjust back to their traditional classroom setting just as soon as officials deem it safe and giving the green light for reopening. The incident serves as a reminder of the unanticipated hurdles that schools and communities may have to navigate in the face of unforeseen disasters. For now, West Mifflin Area High School will remain a virtual learning environment, ensuring that education continues amid restoration.
