In a verdict that brings closure to a heinous act of random violence, a jury has found 37-year-old Xuan Thanh Vo guilty of first-degree murder. The conviction is a result of his actions on August 9, 2022, in which he deliberately ran over and killed 65-year-old Sandra Villarreal in a Walmart parking lot in Oshtemo Township, as reported by WOOD TV.
Court documents revealed that Vo acted upon a disturbing early-morning resolve to commit murder using his car, spurred by feelings of anger and loneliness resulting from a breakup with his ex-girlfriend. The lethal attack, as confirmed by the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor, was premeditated, with Vo laying in wait for a suitable victim. Caught within minutes of the incident by law enforcement, Vo's actions were captured by Walmart's surveillance equipment, showing how he accelerated his maroon Acura towards Villarreal, causing her body to “propels through the air," as described by Detective Sergeant Michael Denoon according to WWMT.
After the impact, eyewitnesses saw Vo fleeing the scene before being pursued and subsequently detained by two civilians. The attack was not a crime of opportunity, with Vo having admitted to authorities that he had previously entertained the idea of committing a similar act at other locations. It was in the relatively deserted Walmart parking lot where he found the opportunity “to accelerate to a high enough speed so that when he hit someone he knew they would be dead," according to police statements detailed by WWMT.
The defense took an unusual approach by not calling any witnesses, likely reflecting the strength of the evidence against Vo. The jury’s verdict aligns with the case’s grim details, including Vo’s confession to planning and carrying out the killing of Sandra Villarreal.
