An 18-year-old suspect has been apprehended in connection with a recent theft and assault case in Southeast Washington, D.C. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) announced that Denayla Martin of Southeast, D.C., turned herself in to authorities yesterday. Martin faces charges for her alleged involvement in a crime that took place earlier this month.
The incident occurred on the unit block of I Street, Southeast, at roughly 6:13 p.m. on Sunday, February 2, 2025, multiple assailants reportedly assaulted an adult male while attempting to take items from a local establishment. The suspects had fled before law enforcement arrived, but after the police were called to the scene, they found the victim, who had sustained injuries during the theft. Despite the initial escape of the culprits, the MPD actively sought public assistance by releasing photos of the alleged offenders, according to a release on the MPD's website.
Martin, who voluntarily presented herself to the police, now faces charges including Simple Assault, Destruction Of Property, and Theft (Second Degree). The police report does not elaborate on her alleged involvement.
The investigation continues for other individuals involved in the incident, Martin's arrest not signifying the end of the MPD's pursuit. The authorities still encourage anyone with information about the case or who can identify other suspects in the released photos to make contact.
