Gage Park's Acero Schools community is grappling with a double dose of unsettling news: potential school closures and an immigration arrest on school grounds. In the early morning hours of Wednesday, as reported by ABC7 Chicago, an adult was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents near two charter schools, Soto High School and Idar Elementary. This action comes at a time of uncertainty, with parents already fighting to keep their schools open.
The detainment has renewed fears for many families, highlighting an already challenging situation. Acero Schools assured parents that ICE agents did not attempt to, nor were they permitted to, enter the schools and that the children present during the arrest were quickly escorted to safety by school administration. "All they are doing is putting fear in us, putting fear in our community and in our children," Acero parent Lucy Salgado told ABC7 Chicago.
In a separate incident adding to the strain on the Acero community, the fate of three of its schools hangs in the balance. In a report by CBS News Chicago, it was revealed that Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz K-12, Octavio Paz, and Sandra Cisneros schools all face possible closure. A resolution to be considered by the Chicago Board of Education the following day could mean the shuttering of these institutions, impacting thousands.
The dual threats of immigration enforcement and school shutdowns have rallied teachers, parents, and local officials to action. I am asking and imploring the BOE to take the opportunity tomorrow to not only vote down this ridiculous amendment but also teach our students a much more valuable lesson — that they are important, and they do matter," Acero teacher Ethan Bulak conveyed to CBS News Chicago. Chicago Public Schools has stated they remain committed to finding a viable path forward.
This turmoil comes at a time when the Acero community was holding out hope that more schools would remain operational, only to be told that financial and legal constraints would not permit it.
