Following the officer-involved shooting on Ira Ave. on Monday, Mayor Malik has issued a statement regarding the fatal incident. According to the City of Akron's official news release, 39-year-old Marcus Smith, identified as the suspect, exchanged gunfire with the police during a response to a stolen vehicle report. The confrontation ended in Smith's death due to injuries sustained from the officers' returned fire.
In his statement through the City of Akron press release, Mayor Malik expressed relief that the responding officers and the community members present were unharmed in the altercation. "Yesterday morning, as officers were responding to a stolen vehicle call, they were fired upon several times by a suspect who has now been identified as 39-year-old Marcus Smith. Three responding officers fired their weapons, and Mr. Smith ultimately passed away from injuries as a result," the Mayor stated. He continued, "In this case, officers responded to an incredibly dangerous situation, and I am deeply thankful that neither the officers nor bystanders were harmed by Mr. Smith’s actions."
The mandated release of body camera footage is anticipated to occur within the next week, adhering to city policies. Additionally, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is set to launch an exhaustive examination of the events, eventually presenting their conclusions to the Summit County grand jury. An internal assessment of the officer's use of force will also be carried out in line with standard protocols, and findings will be made available to the city's independent police auditor.
Mayor Malik's thoughts are with the officers and residents exposed to the traumatic event, and he extended his condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Smith.
