Two alleged mail thieves were arrested after a high-speed chase on the Sawgrass Expressway. On Tuesday last week, Ulrick Brooks, 29, and Jordan Pierre, 28, were charged with burglary and possession of burglary tools after attempting to access a locked mailbox at a Coral Springs commercial condo complex.
As reported by TAPinto Coral Springs, the incident began when a local business owner, who had previously been a victim of mail theft, saw a man in a USPS uniform tampering with the mailbox outside his office. The owner confronted the man, later identified as Brooks, and demanded the return of the stolen USPS key and lanyard. Brooks complied but quickly fled to a car driven by Pierre.
The owner chased the suspects, following them onto the Sawgrass Expressway. The suspects' car eventually had a blown-out tire and spun out on Commercial Boulevard. According to Coral Springs Talk, witnesses saw the suspects abandon their car and flee on foot toward the Hampton Inn in Tamarac, where they were arrested.
Law enforcement from multiple agencies assisted in the search, which led to the discovery of stolen mail in a blue bag discarded in a trash can between the Hampton Inn and Woodspring Suites. The suspects, who were not authorized USPS employees and did not have the right to possess a mailbox key, were booked into Broward County Jail. They were released on a $6,000 bond, and the investigation may reveal connections to other mail theft incidents.
The Coral Springs Police Department is continuing to investigate the case.
