Homeowners in Arizona are adjusting to a new normal with the advent of fresh HVAC system mandates and rebate programs designed to encourage the adoption of greener technology. As detailed on ABC15, starting this year, new regulations from the U.S. Department of Energy require the use of A2L refrigerants in all new HVAC systems, an environmentally friendly choice that might bump up system prices by 20% or more.

Despite the potential increase in upfront costs, there's an economic upside for those in the Grand Canyon state. Arizona's Efficiency Program is stepping up with rebates up to $8,000 for low-income households making the switch to energy-efficient heat pumps. A decision that could pan out to approximately $763 in annual energy savings, as ABC15 reports. Meanwhile, the market is also seeing a rise in demand for energy-efficient innovations like smart plumbing systems and high-efficiency water heaters.

Supporting homeowners on this transition, Brian Garrison, owner of APES HVAC & Plumbing, emphasizes the need for readiness. "Ready or not, these changes are coming, so homeowners would be wise to get ahead of the curve," Garrison told West Valley View. Beyond just meeting the regulations, Garrison views the shift to EPA-compliant refrigerants such as R-454B as a stride toward a healthier environment.

Households with budget constraints have a shot at making environmentally responsible choices without overstretching their finances, thanks to the Efficiency Program's rebates. "These incentives are a game changer for families wanting to enhance their homes without overspending," Garrison said in a statement obtained by West Valley View. Additionally, air quality improvements are on the table as well with the increasing integration of UV purification systems, which tackle the prominent issue of dust and allergens in Arizona.

Technology is improving home heating and cooling with features like smart thermostats and app-controlled remote access for convenience and energy savings. Garrison recommends regular maintenance to prevent breakdowns and costly repairs, with plans starting at $199 per year for seasonal tune-ups, filter replacements, and system inspections.
