Senator Mark Kelly from Arizona has openly criticized President Trump's recent decision to delay tariffs on Mexico and Canada, suggesting that the administration's approach is detrimental to the economy of Arizona. In a statement made by the Senator's Office, Senator Kelly argued that the threat of tariffs continues to loom over Arizona's businesses and workers, potentially resulting in higher costs for families at both the grocery store and the gas pump. The White House has postponed the imposition of these tariffs following Mexico's agreement to deploy troops to the border, a measure they have taken before in response to past concerns over border security.
Kelly's dissatisfaction stems from what he views as political maneuvering at the expense of his state's financial stability, suggesting that the proposed tariffs were unnecessary considering Canada's ongoing cooperation and Mexico's history of border security measures, "President Trump is dangling the Arizona economy off a cliff just so he can take credit for something Canada was already doing and something Mexico has done in the past," Kelly's statement read. The announcement to delay tariffs comes after a tense period of negotiations and policy discussions that have stirred concerns among various economic sectors reliant on trade with these neighboring countries.
This maneuver by the President, according to Senator Kelly, lacks the hallmarks of "real leadership" and fails to offer a collaborative approach to economic growth and border security, "He’s backing down for now, but as long as President Trump’s tariffs hang over our economy, it’s going to hurt Arizona businesses and workers and make families pay more at the grocery store and the gas pump," Kelly expressed, as per the Senator's Office.
