The library's calendar includes creative sessions like the Lego Free Play on Wednesday, February 5, from 4 – 5 p.m., where kids can use their imagination to build anything they envision with Lego blocks. The following day features a friendship bracelet workshop aligning with the themes of love and unity — a come-and-go event that runs from 5 – 8 p.m., and it's perfect for making a tangible token for someone special.
For those intrigued by their heritage, the library has partnered with the Arlington Genealogical Society to present "African-American Genealogy Research" on Tuesday, February 11, at 6:30 p.m. This seminar, led by Christopher Bryant, will delve into using various public records to trace family history. Later in the month, on February 13, the Northeast Branch will host an author talk titled "Love in Color," highlighting the voices of Black women authors and their contributions to the romance genre, according to the City of Arlington.
Transformative art and creativity extend throughout the month, with opportunities to engage in a Cricut for Beginners class focusing on infusible ink, a medium that marries technology with craft. Set for Tuesday, February 18, from 6 – 8 p.m., space is limited for this introductory workshop, which is tailored for those aged 13 and over. Moving on, the Downtown Library dresses up for an Artist Reception on Saturday, February 22, featuring art from local Black creators. This elegant evening, running from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., comes with a recommendation for cocktail attire, enriching the cultural landscape of Arlington's Black History Month celebrations.
These events are wrapped up with a focus on family and culture, compellingly demonstrated through a special storytime on Monday, February 24, and a bilingual storytime the following Thursday. An insightful "Tea Time" on February 26 offers a global tour through the history and flavors of teas and coffees, and budding young artists can even learn to draw Miles Morales, Spider-Man, at the Woodland West Branch on the final Thursday of the month.
