To support children with reading challenges, the Arlington Public Library has rolled out a juvenile large print book collection. This initiative seeks to aid kids who may struggle due to conditions such as visual impairment or dyslexia, as well as those with various neurodivergent learning needs. The library has built upon its adult large print offerings, expanding its resources to younger readers requiring the same attention and care.

According to the Arlington Public Library's recent announcement, the new collection was made possible thanks to a $2,500 grant from the Texas Book Festival, which has supported library collections since 1995. The festival's grants aim to broadly enhance Texas libraries' book, e-book, and audiobook collections, ensuring they're equipped to serve their diverse local communities effectively.

Findings by the School Library Journal spotlight the benefits of large-print books, particularly for students from third to twelfth grade. Such resources can significantly lower anxiety levels and boost focus during reading sessions. Arlington's new collection shines in this light, providing a tangible manifestation of the library's commitment to inclusivity and accessibility in reading.

"Large print bridges the gap between effort and enjoyment for students with reading differences. When words feel approachable, children unlock their capacity to engage with stories rather than fighting the text," Daniel Bull, Library Services Manager, stated, as per the City of Arlington. The collection showcases 142 titles, featuring mainstream hits like "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," writings from Rick Riordan, and award recipients such as "Hello Universe" and "Esperanza Rising."

The library has indicated that these large-print books are available at the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library. Should demand rise, the Public Library is prepared to consider expanding the collection to other branch locations. Patrons can easily request books for pickup at any branch they prefer. Those interested in perusing this new collection can visit the Downtown Library.
