Following a high school basketball game in Dowagiac, Michigan, an incident involving assaults on a referee has led to multiple investigations and calls for improved sportsmanship. After the district semifinal game on Wednesday, in which Buchanan defeated Benton Harbor, several individuals threw objects at one of the game officials. WOOD TV reported that the Dowagiac Police Department has identified some Benton Harbor players and a coach involved in the incident.
Officers quelled the disturbance at the scene and escorted the referee to safety, later ensuring his departure from the premises in his vehicle. While some suspects have been identified, others remain at large. According to WWMT, the police department is enlisting the public's assistance to identify these remaining individuals. The upcoming district championship game, hosted again at Dowagiac Union High School, will see an increased police presence to maintain order and uphold the spirit of sportsmanship.
Superintendent Kelvin Butts of Benton Harbor Area Schools has addressed the situation, emphasizing the positive behavior of the student athletes. "It is important to note that most of the outrage and disorder came from the fans and audience, not our student-athletes. Our student-athletes demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and composure throughout this challenging situation. We truly appreciate their resilience and commend them for representing Benton Harbor with class," Butts stated in communications detailed by FOX 17.
