The tragedy was averted on Wednesday night in South Austin as firefighters battled a 3-alarm fire that engulfed a condo complex, leaving two people and a dog rescued and at least 15 residents displaced, as reported by CBS Austin. The Austin Fire Department was on the scene at the Talisman condos at 1501 Barton Springs Road after receiving calls around 7:45 p.m., only to be met with flames bursting through the roof and frigid temperatures turning their firefighting water to ice. The conditions that night, necessitating a rapid escalation to a third alarm, were described as extremely challenging.
One individual was rescued early in the response, followed by the second person close to 8:49 p.m., seen carried to safety by firefighters, with neither person seeking medical attention. Rescue efforts were further complicated due to freezing temperatures that created hazardous conditions, "the water being used by AFD to put the fire out will turn to ice," according to a KXAN meteorologist, and gusty winds exacerbated the situation, making it a tough fight for the crews on the ground.
Assistant Fire Chief Andre de la Reza, during a media briefing captured by CBS Austin, stated: "Since the fire did go through the roof line, that wind would come up and we already had an exit opening so the fire would intensify but in a way, it was a controlled thing so it would restrict that fire from going further in and start affecting more heavily those other units." The fire reached six units directly but rendered the entire building uninhabitable after the power was lost.
After the fire was knocked down by 9:02 p.m., crews remained vigilant for hotspots, with the displaced inhabitants receiving assistance from the Red Cross. The fire, which caused an estimated $1.1 million in damage, was ruled accidental and believed to have started in the attic area where HVAC and other electrical services are located, as per updates from KXAN. De la Reza further emphasized the residents' ban from re-entering their homes, explaining "We gotta make sure that it’s completely safe, that there’s not a structural danger and they can be in a place that would be safe for them to go back into tonight," indicating a concern for resident safety amid the ongoing investigation.
