Early Thursday morning, flames engulfed an Austin pawn shop, leading to a complex firefighting effort by the Austin Fire Department. Around 3 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to 805 E. Rundburg Lane, encountering a blaze at Action Pawn that required both traditional and high-tech strategies to subdue. An article from CBS Austin reports that aerial drones, digital site maps, and whiteboards were used together to track the progression of the fire.
According to a KXAN article, Wayne Parrish of the Austin Fire Department noted that the smoke inside the pawn shop was too thick to initially locate the fire. Firefighters had to retreat for safety reasons and focus on tackling the fire externally. The high security of the pawn shop added an extra layer of complexity, creating barriers to accessing the building's interior. Parrish also reported a scarcity of operational hydrants in the vicinity, attributed to possible road construction, compelling the fire department to call in additional engines and stretch hoses from farther hydrants to the scene.
The Austin Fire Department faced substantial hurdles besides the fire itself; they grappled with malfunctioning hydrants throughout the area—a crucial issue in the heat of a blaze. "My guess is because of road construction happening there were many fire hydrants that were out of service. We only have one hydrant that's been operational," Parrish told KXAN. In their response, the department summoned two more engine companies to verify and utilize the available water sources.
