Quick action by Austin Police Department led to the arrest of a suspect involved in an aggravated robbery at a local car dealership. According to an official press release by the APD, the incident occurred on Wednesday, February 26, when a man brandished a firearm at an employee and made off with a new Chevrolet Equinox from Capital Chevrolet on S IH-35 Frontage Road. The suspect was identified as Kaynin Jackson, a 31-year-old white male.
The Austin Police promptly responded to the scene after the incident at around 5 p.m. In a coordinated effort between Patrol, the Robbery Unit, and the Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF), supported by the APD's Air Unit, authorities were able to track the stolen vehicle to an East Austin transit station roughly 45 minutes post-robbery. Officers discreetly tailed the vehicle to a Walmart on East Ben White Service Road Westbound, where they arrested without complications.
In the APD announcement, it was revealed that upon searching the recovered vehicle, a handwritten robbery note was found. It is suspected that this note was either previously utilized or intended for use in a bank robbery, suggesting that Jackson may have been planning further crimes.
The efficient detainment of the suspect within an hour and a half from the original 9-1-1 call was instrumental in what the APD believes prevented potential additional violent offenses against residents of Austin. APD is encouraging anyone with further information to contact the Robbery Unit or submit tips anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program.
As investigations are still ongoing, the Austin Police Department continues to seek details that could aid in their case.
