The City of Austin's Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HSEM) office is gearing up to educate residents on emergency preparedness, with a free event taking place later this month. Scheduled for Wednesday, February 19, HSEM's Emergency Preparedness Pop-Up will be hosted at the Pleasant Hill Branch Library from 3-6 p.m. This initiative is part of a broader effort by HSEM to bring monthly emergency readiness sessions to each City Council District, occurring on the third Wednesday of every month.
During the pop-up, attendees will receive practical advice on how to prepare for different disasters that Central Texas is prone to, including winter storms, heat waves, and floods. The first 25 visitors will walk away with an emergency supply kit worth over $100, limiting one per household. These kits pack essentials like a backpack, lanterns, glow sticks, and battery-powered chargers among others, according to the city's announcement.
Informational resources from HSEM and other City departments will be available to residents, aiming to foster a culture of preparedness within the community. Experts will be on hand to share insights and distribute items crucial for an emergency, which may include NOAA weather radios, guides on neighborhood preparedness, and specific supplies for children and pets.
For those unable to attend the pop-up event, HSEM also hosts a range of digital resources at ReadyCentralTexas.org. Here, residents can learn about the four fundamental steps of emergency readiness, and find out about upcoming dates and locations for future Emergency Preparedness Pop-Ups. Preparing for an emergency should never be an afterthought, especially in an area that sees its fair share of natural hazards throughout the year.
