The iconic Malibu Barbie, a symbol of beachside glam and '70s style, is set to make a splash in Austin with the launch of the Malibu Barbie Cafe in April 2025. This unique pop-up experience, already a hit in cities such as New York, Chicago, Miami, and Houston, will open its doors on April 4 at 610 N Interstate Hwy 35, Austin, TX 78701, as reported by CBS Austin.
A colorful throwback to the Malibu Barbie's 1970s era, the cafe, a collaboration between Bucket Listers and toy giant Mattel, promises an immersive "Barbiecore dining" experience, complete with a roller rink where guests can glide back in time, albeit with the energy that matches the modern-day vibrancy of Austin, while Mattel is always looking for exciting new ways to bring the Barbie experience to life, notes Julie Freeland, the Vice President of Global Location-Based Entertainment at Mattel, she told CBS Austin, "every detail has been thoughtfully designed to celebrate the iconic Barbie style."
In charge of the project is Derek Berry, President of Experiences at Bucket Listers, known for creating engaging pop-up phenomena such as Saved by the Max and The Golden Girls Kitchen. The food and drink menu is curated by none other than Master Chef finalist and Chopped Champion Chef Becky Brown, ensuring that guests are treated to a culinary adventure as magical as Barbie's world.
With activities stretching beyond dining, patrons can also indulge in exclusive merch, interactive activities around the rink, and engaging events like Cupcake Decorating Classes and Paint Parties, 21+ Skate Nights offering an inclusive space for all to revel in a spectrum of pastel hues and sparkling delights; every groovy spin on the rink not only recalls the sun-kissed days of Malibu at its zenith but also supports charity with each roller skate rental of $1 being donated to Girls INC, an announcement shared by KXAN.
Tickets for the Malibu Barbie Cafe experience, priced at $25, will include food and merchandise credit and go on sale on February 17. For fans eager to secure a spot at this nostalgic yet contemporary haven, a waitlist is available for those who wish to be the first to be notified about ticket sales.
